Students in the Middle School may participate in up to 2 Launch Activities per year. Launch Activities are high interest activities that provide students in-depth learning experiences in subject areas not normally accessable to regular classrooms. Students must apply for each Launch Activity, which usually takes place during the afternoon hours (during school). These activities are free, and any Middle School Student may apply. Click on the links below to learn about previous Launch Activities.
2007-2008
This year's first Launch activity will take place on Tuesday, October 2. Participating students will board a bus bound for the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha to take in the "Spared From the Storm: Masterworks from the New Orleans Museum of Art". This exhibit is a collection of artwork that was saved from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. Included are works from Degas, O'Keefe, Picasso and Monet.
Launch #2 will take middle school students to the world of scalpels, clamps and anesthesia. On November 14, Dr. Greg McCarthy and a clinic supervisor will lead the students on a tour of pre-op, post-op and an operating room. Students will don scrubs and get a close-up look at some of the instruments used in surgery. It will not be a Launch for the faint-of-heart!

Sixth grade students involved in PROPEL at the middle school level attend class on an A-B rotation for 41 minutes per class period. Classes are small and are focused on enrichment activities in the areas of math, science, language arts, and social studies. Along with enrichment activities we also work on organizational skills, getting used to the middle school way of life and social skills.
Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to take accelerated reading and math classes. The accelerated reading classes are an inquiry-based program where students are given many opportunities to interact with thought-provoking literature as they develop their reading, writing, oral communication, and critical-thinking skills. The accelerated math classes are set up for students to take pre-algebra in the 7th grade and Algebra 1, for high school credit, in the 8th grade.
Extracurricular activities that are offered to PROPEL students are Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Math Counts, Math Olympiad, Knowledge Master Open, ExploraVision, and science fair.

The 4th and 5th grade pull-out portion of PROPEL Academy is coordinated and instructed by Kristi Wilshire. Students who have been identified as gifted receive 2.5 hours of instruction per week at Covington Elementary School. Each week the children travel by bus to Covington, returning to their home school when finished with the day's lesson.
Students receive instruction in creative problem solving, advanced research topics, leadership skills, critical thinking skills, and more. A small amount of weekly homework may be ssigned, depending on the skills covered and the time of year.
